Description: Since 1988, Ekal Vidyalaya operates innovative, single teacher, non-formal schools in the rural and tribal communities. Kalakendra
Description: Kalakendra was founded in 1987 in Portland, Oregon to promote the classical arts from the Indian sub-continent. It was founded at Sathya Narayanan’s house in Feb 1987. This meeting was attended by Kathryn Jackson, Dr. Nagendra Tirumali, Steve Amdahl, Dr. Durgam Chakrapani, Harry Callow, Rick Masterson, Sathya Narayanan, and Shankar.
Kalakendra is currently in its 24th season for 2010 to 2011.
Kalakendra mean “Arts Center” in Hindi .
We have an all volunteer Board of Directors who do everything, from taking tickets at the concert to putting on education classes for community. We do have an Executive Director or pay anyone; we do it out of love for the music and tradition.
We have brought Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Zakir Hussian, Tibetan Monks, John McLaughlin, and numerous others. The list includes so many people who have won countless awards from Grammys to Sangeet Natak Academy Award.
