Practical Problem Solving

When you are faced with a tough problem, act immediately. I can say from personal experience that the best way to resolve problems is to avoid dragging them out.
The following story illustrates this idea. Once upon a time, a robber was caught by soldiers. When the king asked him why he had tried to steal, he remained silent. The king said to him, “I will give you three options. You can choose one as punishment, and then you can go.” The alternatives were to pay a huge penalty, work in the king’s kitchen for three months, or allow the soldiers to beat him for thirty minutes.
The robber chose the third option, but within five minutes, he could no longer bear the pain. He was able to convince the king to allow him to switch to the second option, and he started working in the king’s kitchen, but he soon began to feel that the work was extremely boring—and he realized that he could not cook. Finally, he took the first option and paid the penalty.
The story shows how “timely action” can help you to avoid future troubles. If you do not act quickly when a problem arises, you may make the problem worse.
Learn to welcome your problems! The more that you welcome them and learn from them, the better that your mind will prepare you to handle them.
