Facts about Tiranga - National Flag of India

  1. The national flag of India, also called Tiranga, has 3 colors

    • Top part of the flags is Saffron (Kesari)

    • Middle part is While with Ashok Chakra in navy blue. Ashok chakra has 24 spokes

    • Bottom parts is Green

  2. The saffron color represents courage and sacrifice; white represents truth, peace and purity; and green represents prosperity. The Ashok Chakra represents the Laws of Dharma (righteousness)
  3. The flag is based on the Swaraj flag, a flag of the Indian National Congress designed by Pingali Venkayya

  4. The flag, in it's present form, was adopted on 22nd July 1947 as the official flag of India.

  5. The flag has a ratio of 2X3 and should be made of Khadi (hand-spun cloth of cotton or silk)
  6. The right to manufacture the flag is held by the Khadi Development and Village Industries Commission, who allocate it to the regional groups for manufacturing the flag.

  7. The usage of flag is governed by Flag Code of India, which originally code prohibited use of the flag by private citizens except on national days such as the Independence day and the Republic Day. But the code was recently amended to allow the use of flag even on certain form of clothing.
