We have compiled several questions that you should ask a nanny to ensure that you are making the right decision.
How long have you been a nanny? What ages of children have you worked with? This will tell you about her experience and comfort level with the kids.
Why do you do this work?
This will give you idea about what motivates her, there is no right or wrong answer but the answer will guide your intuition.
Have you ever been in an emergency situation while take care of a kid and what did you do?
These questions can give you an idea about her thought processes about emergencies and how she handles stressful situation.
Describe one best child one worst child you ever took care of.
This can reveal her attitudes about children and her behavior. Listen closely to the words that she uses to explain the children. Does the applicant take any responsibility or does she blame everything on the child and parents?
What do you do when you become angry with a child? How would you react if a child hit you?
Same as above, it will reveal her attitude and behavior.
What is your philosophy about child discipline?
Again this will show her attitude and behavior and also tell you how she will tackle tricky situations with your child.
How do you normally spend the day with a child?
This will enable you to know her creativity in working at things. Does she enjoy playing with children? Will she keep your child busy? Will your child enjoy her company?
Do you have infant /child CPR certification?
It is always nice to have this certification but might not be a deal breaker. If she does not have the certification, ask her what she will do in a situation when child needs a CPR.
When would you call a pediatrician or 911?
Her management skills are revealed by this question.
Ask about any medical conditions that be relevant, ask about if she smokes, drinks and has any drug abuse problems You can even have the nanny pass the medical and drug-screen test.
