8/1/1947Partition of India into India and Pakistan. Power transferred. Lord Mountbatten becomes Governor General of India and Muhammed Ali Jinnah, Governor General of Pakistan.
2/28/1884Veer Surendra Sai, freedom fighter and revolutionary, passed away.
2/9/1993Silver prices crash as the govt allows passengers to import upto 100 k and reduces customs duty on 35 baggage items from 255 to 150 \%.
12/7/1995Indian National Satellite (INSAT-2C), third indigenous satellite in the INSAT-2 series, launched. This has additional capabilities such as mobile satellite service, business communication and television outreach beyond Indian boundaries. This is still in service. It was launched by Ariane launch vehicle at French Guyana.
8/26/2000Vijay Kumar wins the Hindu Open Golf championship at the Cosmopolitan Club in Chennai.
6/29/2000The Election Commission derecognises seven regional parties in some states -- Samata Party in Haryana, Shiv Sena in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and the RJD in Manipur, NTR-Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) in Chandigarh, the United Minority Front in Assam and the Haryana Vikas Party in Haryana-- These will remain registered but unrecognised parties.
2/17/1993Rani Gaidinliu, freedom fighter, social reformer and political leader, died at her native village in Manipur. The British army made a surprise attack on her position and captured her. On 17th October, 1932, Pandit Nehru once wrote ""A day will come when India will remember her and cherishe her"".
9/1/1988Fatte Singrao Gaekwad of Baroda, former Member of Parliament, passed away.
11/3/1986Dr. Indrachandra Shastri, versatile in Sanskrit and Pali, died.
