Historical Event on 8/25/1917

The first significant step towards the Indianization of the Army was initiated when seven selected Indians, serving in the Army, were granted King's Commission in the Infantry and the Cavalry. Before the World War ended, two more Indians, who previously held temporary commissions, were granted King's Commission.

8/25/1917Sher Shah Sur died. He was fatally wounded in an explosion on Kalanjara fort while preparing for an attack. He introduced the new silver rupee-coin ""Rupiya"" based on ratio of 40 copper coin pieces (paisa) per rupee and built several roads including the longest road of India known as Grand Trunk Road (now Natioinal Highway-2).

12/13/1984The death toll in a toxic gas leak from an insecticide plant in Bhopal, India, now is estimated at 2,100, and tens of thousands of residents fled the city today after it was announced that the Union Carbide plant would be started up again to neutralize the effect.
